Do we need journalists?

Journalists.

What comes to a person’s mind when you ask them about journalists?
Do we need journalists?
“Politicians’ toys that they use to sway people’s minds”

“Journalist give an idea of what’s happening... but not all what they say can be reliable”

“Exposes truth, scandals, corruption, exaggeration, misleading, tabloids, and no sense of privacy”

These are some of what my friends and family told me when I asked them. So far I haven’t met that many people who think to fondly of journalists.

I am a journalist, or at least I have a BA in Journalism. I haven’t actually worked for a newspaper but I am getting around to that soon. After four years of studying how to write leads, opinion pieces, bias and how not to be influenced by it, the “news” factor, what makes news, interviewing skills, about objectivity and how ownership of media affects decisions made, etc… After all that, I may not be really needed.

By “needed” I don’t mean that I won’t find a job at a newspaper and get promoted and so on, but that I, as a journalist, am not viewed anymore as a valuable contributor to society. Journalists were once considered trusted people in communities; exposing crime, corruption and getting the girl. Well, not that glamorous and not to that extent of course, but in general journalists were very trustworthy sources of information, unlike now. I knew that journalists weren’t trusted before I started my studies, it didn’t happen overnight, but I thought that in time and along with the advancements in technology perhaps the stereotype of journalists being misleading, untrustworthy and tools of the government would change.

I could go on for hours about the reasons that journalists have been stereotyped as distrustful, invading privacy and being Machiavellians because of sensationalising news, yellow journalism, etc… But it’s not because of that which makes me think journalists may not be needed.

One of the reasons I believe so are bloggers (other reasons include; broadcast media). We all know about bloggers and what they are so I won’t go into any detailed explanation of them. It is not just simply bloggers, its bloggers who self proclaim themselves as journalists. I am not saying that all bloggers can’t be journalists or that they wouldn’t be good journalists, but why don’t we leave the journalism to journalists?

It is true that bloggers do not have some of the same pressure that journalists face from the people who pay their salary, but while blogger may not face the same pressure, it leaves them to follow an agenda of their own purposely or not.

People train and study for certain professions to make a living and do their part for society. For example; would you buy furniture built by a tailor? Would you ask a butcher to perform surgery on you? Would you ask a chef to create you a computer database for a company? I would think in most cases you would say no to all of these. Journalists are trained to be accurate, professional, unbiased and objective. I think while blogging is an excellent way forward for journalism, it should not take its place.

What about if some bloggers are as prepared as certain journalis and are just trying to avoid all those ”bias” forces that work inside the stablished journalism world?
Or how about if those bloogers are doing what some journalist do but withouth the hidding?
And talking about techonology and communication and so on... couldn’t this be a new form of journalism that our generation is asking for?

There are bloggers who are just as prepared as others, but in most cases they are not, and there is nobody to review what they are doing and stop them from publishing wrong information (if it is so). There are many bloggers who do what journalists do ”without the hiding” but my problem is that suddenly bloggers have become the truth bearers of the modern world and now journalists seem to be the lying scum of the universe!!
Blogging has already become a tool in journalism and is a powerful force in its own right.

Thanks for reading :)

Rise of popular bloogging is taking on the part (to quite an extent) of eating up profits which were earlier the sole forte of journalists and newspapers

I don’t think it is too quite that extent Kanchan. Most profits newspapers get are from advertising and I still think that newspapers edge blogs out very much in advertising revenue. I am not sure how much blogs make, but I guess the most blogs that make money are in the U.S? If you have any information regarding that, let me know :)
Thanks!

Hi Adam,

Yes, I think that journalists are still needed. But mainly for the dissemination of information arising from areas that are not easily accessible to the ordinary blogger. I do not see anyone opening the doors of, say, the pentagon to bloggers anytime soon. Or the gates of the queen’s palace or some such other hallowed grounds.

But for other everyday matters, mainstream journalists seem to be lagging behind and even despite concerns for bias or objectivity, we are now seeing chunks of material being yanked out of blogs straight into newspaper pages. Sad to say, but the truth is that even opinion pieces from trained journalists many times pale badly compared to those of bloggers.

To stretch your analogies further, why wait for the chef to make me tea if s/he’s late and I can do so, perhaps even with spicier effect?

But there will always be need for journalists. And chefs.

I think tea is maybe a little too simple example, try sushi! :D If the chef isn’t there to prepare, will you be able to prepare it just as good?

I agree with you about getting into important places, but I believe that it will only be a matter of time until it will be allowed.

Journalists are needed. Journalists mind you, and not some one who has a liking for the yellow color. Journalists give credibility to a news event that cannot be guaranteed by so called citizen journalists.

I agree with you greatly on that. The trouble is that the majority of people nowadays are more attracted and interested in yellow journalism which is a real shame. I believe citizen journalists play an important role to all journalists as they can help them in their work, just by the fact of highlighting news that a journalist has missed (not neglected).

If citizen journalism replaces mainstream journalism then the world would have headlines as - UFO lands in Berkshire, or Aliens kidnap villager. Rumors would find places in front page of newspapers and headlines of news channels. A hell lot of these blogger-journalists are bogus and sensationalists. We don't need that.

:D Yes, that could be true. I think what would be a great benefit, to both bloggers and journalists, is if there were a committee/organization formed specially for blogs, so that they could give some sort of approval of blogs. I don’t know how it could be formed, but if it were formed it would need much time and not be bound by financial constraints/restrictions/ownership as many newspapers or media in general have.

It depends on whether you are a common man or a media house owner, especially the ones out there to make a quick buck like we are witnessing in online media and televisions in India. Some TV news channels here have lowered the bar so much that they have become comedy channels.

In today’s world we live in, this will always be a plague affecting the quality of news delivered by media organizations. Truly a shame...

You don't have to be a knowledgeable person to become today's journalist. A kindergarten dropout can become a journalist today. If you have an opinion, have fingers and can type you are a journalist. I have seen many Russian experts here like that.

Just so I understand what you are saying, do the ”Russian experts” have real expertise or do they just claim so?

:D You’re right, the tea example was a bit simple but deliberately so. Because, unlike the sushi chef, many a journalist are not really preparing anything exotic.

Ultimately, their prevalence will be determined by the size of a willing consumer base. I imagine that is probably why sushi is also not served in every corner cafe.

True about the sushi, but nonetheless, no as simple as tea. Nowadays you see alot more journalists giving opinions. Even though that is part of journalism, a smaller part I might add. The essence of journalism is reporting news without opinion or bias, reporting events as they are. That may seem easy but considering how emotions easily affect people in everyday life, it is not all that easy.
Thank you for your comments!

Mere blogging is not journalism. It takes a while to learn the essence of real journalism by possessing the total package of a communicator with sense.

I am a journalist, but I chose to use my skills in other fields of endeavor like research, editing and writing that are not media-related. Or, I should say away from the low-pay newspapering or broadcast media.

Responding to the query, ”Are journalists needed?,” I believe journalists will exist in the realm of daily living. People who are willing to read news stories and know the latest happenings around the globe are the market for journalists.

Corruption is everywhere and not only seen in media. Not all journalists are corrupt. Some remain strong to combat the evildoings of society. Good reporting should not be left to household bloggers who never go out of the streets and validate what’s the real score of a particular event.

I agree with you and thats a point a lot of people fail to see. I am going to write a piece about how new media is making us lazier! Hope you will check that out!

its a vicious circle Adam Just like yellow journalism their can be blogging of the same kind.... Big companies paying bloggers just to endorse their products... Its all a question of your awareness or perception to be able to look beyond words...

That is very true, but unfortunately many people in this day and age are not able to do what you said, or just choose not too.
